Easy Meals in Your College Apartment You Will Love

One of the eye-opening aspects of moving into your own college apartment is the realization that you are completely responsible for you own meals. Sure, you may share things with roommates, if you have them, but what you eat and when you eat is now mainly in your hands. Some students, though rare, will enjoy expanding their culinary skills during this period. Most, however, will go in search of ways to prepare easy meals in your college apartment.

If you are attending the University of Georgia, making sure your accommodations offer the appropriate cooking facilities can be very helpful in this endeavor. It can also be helpful to have some menu ideas to get started.

Easy Meals in Your College Apartment That Will Fill the Belly

While there certainly is a movement to eat healthier, most college students are looking for cheap, easy to make meals that fill the belly. Here are a few.

• Macaroni and Cheese. This old standby is simple and filling. If you are in the mood to get exotic, cut up some hot dogs into your macaroni and cheese. Feel guilty and want a more healthful spin? Add some broccoli. Yes, we said broccoli. You get dairy, starches, greens and protein all in one easy to prepare, inexpensive meal.

• Tuna Casserole. Boil up a medium bag of wide noodles, and mix together a can of mushroom soup, a couple of small cans of tuna and some frozen peas. Toss into a casserole dish and toss in the oven for 30 minutes. Want to get a bit exotic? Toss some of your favorite cheese on top. Cheap, easy and cheesy.

• Spam and Onions. Hey, don’t knock it until you try it. Cut a can of spam into ¼ inch slices, and fry them with either slices or chunks of onion. Serve with some instant (or real) mashed potatoes and your favorite veggies. You just may surprise yourself.

• Giant Chef Salad. Salads are one of the easiest things to make for college students, and they can be hearty if you add the right ingredients. Start with a head of lettuce and cut up some onion, green peppers and tomatoes. Add some shredded cheese and cubes of your favorite lunch meat. Once you include the dressing of your choice you are ready for a relatively healthy choice of easy meals in your college apartment.

• Make Your Own Pizza. You are attending college to learn, right? You can take this to any extreme you like. Make your own dough from scratch, or begin with a pre-made crust. Get some pizza sauce and add your favorite pizza ingredients. The beauty is you can add as much cheese and pepperoni as you like. This will take some experimentation but once you get a handle on it, your apartment will be pizza-party central.

• Pork Chops and Noodles with Applesauce. Frying up some pork chops in a pan is easier than you may think, and when you add noodles and applesauce to the plate, you may have a new favorite. Just make sure you cook the pork all the way through, without over-cooking it.

• Spaghetti. It just doesn’t get easier than this. Boil some spaghetti noodles and add some jarred or canned spaghetti sauce. This is also another opportunity to practice your culinary skills by sauteing onions, mushrooms or other ingredients. If you want a pro-tip, toast some slices of bread, add butter and sprinkle some garlic salt on them. Yummo.
