How to Know What to Pack for College

If you are looking for a list of what to pack for college there are plenty of “lists” available out there. The problem? There are few college experiences that are exactly the same. Some students attend college an hour or two away from home, others across country. Some will live in a dorm on campus while others may choose off campus housing. A one-size-fits-all list is likely not going to suit your specific needs. The better question may be how do you determine what to pack for college. Here are some things to consider.

Are you moving into a furnished or unfurnished apartment?

There are a lot of benefits to moving into a furnished apartment, one of which is moving a lot less “stuff”. Either way, determining whether you will need furniture or not is a critical starting point.

Will you have roommates?

Deciding if you will have roommates and how many you have will have a big impact on what you may need for college. It will be helpful to determine what roommates can contribute what to the household to make sure you have what you need.

What to Pack for College? Not ALL of your clothes.

Why wouldn’t you pack all of your clothes when packing for college? For one, space is usually an issue, either when moving and/or at your college apartment. Keep in mind too, the more you clothes you have with you, the longer you are likely to put off doing laundry! Pack for two weeks and for a variety of weather changes and you should be good to go.

Determine where and how you will secure personal items.

Many college apartments become high traffic areas and personal valuables can get “lost”. When determining what to pack for college determine how you will secure valuables and personal items. It could be a lock-box, personal safe or even a lockable file cabinet or desk.

Will you have private space?

One of the big factors in determining what to pack for college is knowing how much personal space you will have. Will you have your own private bedroom or bath? If so, you will want to bring items to make it feel more like home or to express your personality.

The sooner you know where you will be living, the better you will be prepared for your college move. That’s why starting to research living options early in your college plans is so critical. Determining how many rooms you have, if they will be furnished, how many roommates you will be sharing space with and how much personal space you have ultimately impacts what you will need to pack for college.
